Extreme Happiness Could Cause You To Suffer A Heart Attack
Heard the one about the man who laughed so much that he had a heart attack?
It’s long been known that excessive stress can cause a heart attack - but now scientists are saying that the same can be said for happiness too.
Takotsubo Syndrome, otherwise known as TTS, was first discovered in the 1990s - and sees sufferers having a heart attack after dealing with upsetting life events, such as cancer diagnosis or the death of a parent.
But in a few instances, it was found that the heart attack was instead triggered by episodes of extreme HAPPINESS - such as a birthday party, surprise celebration or even the birth of a grandchild.
The bizarre condition has now been dubbed ‘Happy Heart Syndrome’ - and was discovered after scientists surveyed 1,750 TTS patients, and found instances of happiness in 20 of them.
Dr Jelena Ghadri, from University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland, said: ‘We have shown that the triggers for TTS can be more varied than previously thought.
‘A TTS patient is no longer the classic ‘broken hearted’ patient, and the disease can be preceded by positive emotions too.’
TTS traditionally occurs when the heart chamber balloons at the bottom of the neck.
Patients suffering from the condition are especially prone to chest pains and breathlessness, and at risk of suffering a potentially fatal heart attack.
