Ways To Protect Your Data
For a start, remember this simple rule – your data is valuable as long as you protect it. Because once it’s gone, and you have no backup solution to provide you with a complete insurance, you can take your mind off it because it’s gone forever.
With that in mind, here’s 5 very easy tips to make sure you keep your data protected and you forgo any headaches.
Headaches that can easily be avoided.
•Use a Strong Password
That might seem like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised at how many people use “password” or “1234” as their password for even the most important accounts that they have online.
And whenever you do a crypted backup, do not ever ever use “backup” as a password. Protected data is valuable data, so keep it safe!
•Backup often
Another no-brainer, which is even more evident is our evolved backup solutions – you get the option to back up every hour, every day, every week…
Make sure you select the appropriate solution for you, but if you try really really hard to ignore (read – I don’t care about it), make sure you select at least the “daily backup” option. For peace of mind, select hourly backup and let the system do the job.
You can forget about it, but just make sure you revisit it once every week at least.
•Encrypt your Data
Modern backup solutions offer this security option, which is gradually becoming a norm in the industry. By encrypting your data you ensure that you don’t allow any unauthorised access to it, especially if you somehow manage to lose it.
So back up your data and encrypt it for safekeeping.
And don’t forget that password please…
•Constantly Monitor Your Backups
Your backups are like your insurance – if they work, you’re protected. If they don’t, you’re screwed. Use mobile monitoring apps and similar software to make sure your backups are optimal at any time of the day – so you don’t get caught offside whenever you have a potential data issue.
Keep your eyes on your backups!
• Backup, backup, backup!
Recent research in the past year of 2013 has shown that the U.S. industries have lost a combined 18 BILLION DOLLARS in revenue after suffering extensive data loss. Target Corp suffered a massive data loss last year, the same happened to eBay 6 months later (early 2014), not to mention a whole host of other companies who suffered because they were ill-prepared to deal with data loss.
Fortunately for eBay and Target, both of them had backup systems. And that allowed them to regain their footing quite rapidly.
Now imagine if neither of them had a backup solution…
