Men more worried about reducing breasts than women!
#Lucknow #Uttar Pradesh: Breast reduction surgery may seem like a woman's worry but plastic surgeons in Lucknow say there is an increase in the number of men opting for it instead.

According to a report in Times of India, estimates gathered from different hospitals show that every month 20-25 men undergo the knife to get a perfect chest. In this way, they outnumber women going in for breast reduction.

On the eve of national plastic surgeons' day, experts drew attention towards the problem called gynaecomastia.

"It generally means breast enlargement that is primarily attributed to hormonal imbalance," said AK Singh, head of plastic surgery department at King George's Medical University which undertakes at least six cases every month.

While the problem is caused by hormonal imbalances—which are curable by medication—the undesired physical changes that occur can only be corrected by surgery.

Head of plastic surgery department at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences Dr Rajeev Agarwal said hormonal imbalance is often caused by factors like obesity, use of steroids for body building and lifestyle factors particularly lack of exercise. "Imbalance triggers higher release of female hormone that accelerates breast formation," he stated.

Male and female hormones—androgen and oestrogen—are present in all humans. Oestrogen is dominant in females, while androgen rules in men. It's common misconception that men don't have female hormones and vice-versa.

"Imbalance disturbs the ratio of male-female hormones. Breast enlargement in men is the outcome in men while the imbalance results in facial hair in women," they explained.

On why people go in for surgery, doctors said desire for a shapely body or at least one that is not feminine in appearance drives men in the city head to plastic surgeons and take up a breast reduction surgery. "Men with women-like breast often feel embarrassed. It is purely a cosmetic intervention which has psychological benefits," they explained.

Doctors, however, expressed concern over appearance of cases because of lifestyle factors. "There are fewer cases of women-like breasts due to natural hormone imbalance. Almost 55% cases are below 30 years of age while the remaining were in 30-42 years age bracket. Lifestyle factors particularly obesity caused the trouble in most while some of them fell prey to steroids," said Dr Agarwal.
