9 tips to get better battery life out of your smartphone

Battery life is perhaps the biggest issue a modern smartphone user faces. Gone are the days where you could go without charging your phone for days at a stretch. These days, especially with modern Android smartphones dominating the market, you probably need to lug around a charger or a microUSB cable as a bare minimum. If not that then, perhaps, you carry a battery pack or have a battery case, which adds more juice to your phone's feeble longevity. Of course, if you do not want to do all this then there are some tips that you can follow, which will ensure that your phone at least lasts through the day. Read on.

1. Turn your location settings off. With location settings off, your phone's GPS is always trying to lock-in on your position and obviously, this consumes a lot of power. Often the location sharing is on automatically, so on an Android phone you have to dive into the setting menu to turn it off.

2. Lower the brightness levels of your phone. The brighter the screen, the more battery it consumes. The bright screen may look nice, but it will consume more power. Ideally, you should configure your automatic brightness levels in such a way that the content is legible for most scenarios, but it is not overly bright.

3. Switch off unused apps. On an Android phone, if you keep switching between multiple apps like the camera, the app remains turned on in the background. All these apps will consume more power and hence drain the battery life of your phone. In the case of the camera, it could even keep drawing information from the GPS, which could make it an even bigger hog.

4. Be on the lookout for data hogs. In the settings menu, you should always keep a tab on apps or processes that consume a lot of battery and data. Even if the app does not consume a lot of battery chances are, it is making full use of the 3G network your phone is connected to, which in turn cause the battery to drain faster. The Facebook app and Google Now are good examples, as they will pull location information. Turn them off if you want to save on your battery.

5. Always switch to a Wi-Fi network when possible. On many phones, this happens automatically, but in the case it does not happen, you should make it a point to switch to a Wi-Fi network as it uses battery to a lesser degree.

6. Switch to 2G by going into the mobile network settings. If you do not use data and primarily use the phone for calls and messages, staying on a 2G network will be of greater benefit. Chances are you will also get better network performance, as lesser people will be using 2G network so the network will be less clogged.

7. If you happen to use a phone that uses a Qualcomm processor, then you can download the Qualcomm Battery Guru app for Android. The app will analyze your usage and will optimse the settings of the phone. When used with the Qualcomm Glance lockscreen app, battery is enhanced even more. However, it is likely; the Glance app will not be everyone's cup of tea.

8. Always set your display to sleep after 15 seconds. Often you may not be using the phone the display will be lit up and it will consume even more battery.

9. If you use a high-end phone like a Sony Xperia Z3, a HTC One M8 or a Samsung Galaxy Note 4, then use the inbuilt software based battery enhancement modes. These battery savers are often optimised in a particular way for the phone in question and greatly improve the battery life. In fact, even when the phone is running out of battery, certain functions of the phone are disabled so that the phone can be usable for phone calls and messaging for a long time.
